Animal Rescue Centers have become a profitable industry in Ecuador and across Latin America—a place where wild animals are kept in zoo-like conditions, and each new batch of volunteers are told that the animals will be released shortly after they leave but rarely are. For this reason, I’ve been reluctant to endorse Animal Rescue Centers in the Ecuadorian Amazon because many are counter-productive to the rehabilitation and release of exotic animals.
The one Animal Rescue Center in the Amazon I have worked with for almost a decade, however, is run by Medardo and Lucero Tapia, and I can testify to their amazing commitment to the welfare, rehabilitation, and release of exotic Amazonian animals. There are plenty of volunteer testimonies of this Animal Rescue Center which you can read on this site.
