Around the time this website was started the vast majority of volunteer work programs in Ecuador and South America cost thousands of dollars per month.
This was a period of time when most of the money volunteers paid did not go to communities or conservation projects in need – it went to giant tourism companies that had a stranglehold over the volunteer work industry in its infancy.
The vision for this organization however was to create a social enterprise that is sustainable, transparent and uses low-cost volunteer work as a vehicle for change.
Since then ecuadorecovolunteer.org has gone through a number of growing pains but has matured to the point where it does not need constant supervision to connect volunteers with conservation projects and NGO’s on the ground in Ecuador.
Volunteer’s like you can now contact conservation and community development programs directly instead of dealing with middlemen.
In order to increase transparency on each volunteer program you can now read comments (both good and bad) from past volunteers as well as comment yourself – what you liked, what you think can be improved.
There’s also a Suggest a Program and the more people that recommend high quality, trustworthy and always-improving volunteer programs the more likely it will be added to ecuadorecovolunteer.org
The suggestions chosen as well as the volunteer programs already listed here go through a rigorous selection process: having followed trends in the industry for several years I am well aware of the damaging influence that voluntourism has on the developing world.
