Volunteer in a small village called Palictahua that is located beside the river Puela near the volcano Tungurahua. The village is surrounded by verdant green mountains covered in Andean forest and the river that runs through the valley is fed by the several great waterfalls reaching up to 300 metres in height. One of the most fascinating aspect of the place is that part of the village was destroyed in a volcanic eruption in 2006 – since then safety evacuation proceedures have been created by the Ecuadorian military to guarantee the safety of the people staying in Palictahua.
Expected Tasks While Volunteering:
- Looking After Guinea Pig and other Farm Animals
- Organic Farming
- Community Work
- Teaching English
A Typical Day While Volunteering:
Volunteers will wake early to have breakfast with the family they are living with and then set out to start working on the organic farm hand in hand with others in the community and taking care of the animals and Guinea Pigs that are bred on the farm. In the afternoon volunteers will be involved in community work and teaching English to the children of the community.
Why This Volunteer Work Project is Important:
By helping these Indigenous Villages rise out of poverty and become more self sufficient we will be reducing the ‘rural exodus’ of poor farm workers into dangerous slums with high unemployment in the big cities like Quito and Guayaquil. It also helps the community create a more environmentally sustainable way of living by encouraging conservation and reducing the reliance on exploiting the natural resources in the environment for money.
